Dymo 500TS reviewFirst impression: This thing is BIG, in fact the biggest label maker I have ever seen (it's about the size of my desk phone). However the quality of construction is very substantial, it looks like it was designed to last a long time. This is not a cheap plastic handheld label maker by any means. Keyboard spacing and feel is almost touch-type quality. Setting it up: Although a full instruction booklet is enclosed, it doesn't seem to have been written by anyone who has actually used the 500TS. The first instruction is to insert the battery being careful to observe the polarity markings. Yes the battery itself has + and - markings, they are nowhere to be found on the printer itself and the terminals are deeply recessed in the unit. The only way of doing it right is to try to figure out the little drawing in the book. Inserting the label cassette was just as challenging, it only fits one way but Dymo does a terrible job illustrating how it... The DYMO Label manager LM 500TS Touch Screen Lable maker is a bit big, the cartridges to reload it, a bit pricey, but the quality of the labels and the ease of use is great. It has a QWERTY keyboard, a touch screen interface, and a lack of decent instructions. Once you start playing with it, you can change fonts and print sizes, add symbols and print with ease. The link to a USB cable line did not seem to work as my Windows 7 operating system, which did not recognize the device and thus I could not load any images to the label maker as promised. The unit is fairly quiet, and I haven't seen much degradation in the rechargeable batteries after using it for about three dozen labels and purposefully leaving it on for an extended period: not being tethered to a cord makes this unit very convenient as you walk around your home or office and use it in other rooms. The touch screen is very handy for quickly changing fonts and formats.The lettering is very crisp, and comes with a variety of fonts and font sizes - more than I will every need (I am a boring accountant). This unit prints about 4x faster than the similar-sized Brother printer I have in my office, and one of the better features is I can save repetitive-type label formats in the printer's memory for use at a later date and time: I wish I would have had this unit several years ago as I can't tell you how much time I have wasted in the past setting a similar structure up for different types of home vs. office type filing structures.
